What happens when you apply

The steps are the same at every Regional Center. Only the numbers to call are different.

  1. Make the callCall the intake line, or use the center's online form if it has one. You can apply for your child, another family member, or yourself.
  2. An intake conversationSomeone asks about daily life, what's hard, and when it started. Share any reports you already have.
  3. A free assessmentThe Regional Center may set up its own testing. There's no charge for it.
  4. A decision, then a planThe decision takes up to 120 days. If it's yes, you'll get a service coordinator and write a plan together that lists your services.

Baby or toddler under 3? Call the center's Early Start line instead. Anyone can make the referral, and Early Start has 45 days to evaluate and write a plan. There's no charge for the evaluation.

No diagnosis yet? You can still apply. The Regional Center runs its own assessment, so bring whatever reports you have and don't wait for more.

Questions about applying

Does it cost anything to apply?

No. The assessment that decides whether someone qualifies is free, and you can call the intake line yourself.

Can an adult apply?

Yes, at any age. What matters is that the disability started before age 18.

Do we need a diagnosis before we call?

No. The Regional Center does its own assessment. Bring any reports you have, but you don't need to wait for one.
