What makes this visual schedule good?
Built on the methods behavior specialists use:
- Task analysis. Every routine split into its real steps, in order.
- The Premack principle. First the hard step, then something they love.
- Functional communication. Help and Break cards, so asking replaces meltdowns.
- Priming. A Surprise card prepares them before plans change.
- Interest-based learning. Five worlds built on what kids love.

How to use a visual schedule
- Print the pages on card stock, or print on paper and laminate them.
- Cut out the cards for one routine.
- Line them up in order on the My schedule board.
- Before each step, point to the card and say the word.
- When the step is done, your child takes the card off.
Start small: one routine, or just the First / Then board for one hard step. When plans change, show the Surprise card before you move the cards around.
Questions parents ask
Is the visual schedule really free?
Yes. Pick a look, and the whole set comes to your inbox. Print it as many times as you like.
What should I print it on?
Card stock lasts longest. Plain paper works too if you laminate it or cover it with clear packing tape. The white backgrounds keep ink use low.
How many cards should we start with?
Start small: three or four steps of one routine, or just the First / Then board. Add steps as your child gets used to it.
What if my child doesn't get pictures yet?
Start with the real thing. Hold up the toothbrush before brushing. Then show the card next to the toothbrush, and later the card alone.
If our Regional Center pays for help with these routines at home, will we lose IHSS or respite hours?
No. That help won't shrink your IHSS hours or your respite hours. The state told each county to count Regional Center help as zero when it sets IHSS. Read it here.
